Primary Curriculum

Primary curriculum overview

At our school, primary-aged pupils are grouped into three classes Primary Red, Primary Yellow and Primary Blue based on age and individual learning needs. Each class uses a tailored teaching approach to support progression toward independent learning.

Primary Red

Pupils in Primary Red follow a personalised blended curriculum that combines elements of the Birth to 5 Matters framework and the Equals Curriculum (Semi-Formal Pathway).

Learning takes place through a balance of child-initiated exploration and adult-led activities, supported by a full continuous provision approach. The classroom is carefully designed with a range of engaging learning areas and resources that encourage curiosity, communication, independence and the development of key skills. Staff tailor learning experiences to meet each child’s individual needs, promoting progress in a nurturing and supportive environment.

Our continuous provision learning areas include:

Primary Yellow

Pupils in Primary Yellow follow a personalised blended curriculum that combines elements of the Birth to 5 Matters framework and the Equals Curriculum (Semi-Formal Pathway).

Learning is designed to be fun, engaging and meaningful, with pupils grouped appropriately to support their individual learning needs. The classroom provides a range of opportunities for play-based learning, including reading, construction, small world play and creative activities. These experiences help to develop communication, social interaction, independence and problem-solving skills.

As pupils progress, there is an increased focus on developing readiness for learning through more structured activities, while still maintaining opportunities for exploration and play.

Primary Blue

Pupils in Primary Blue follow the National Curriculum for English and Mathematics, alongside the Equals Curriculum (Formal Pathway) for other areas of learning.

Learning is more structured and pupils are taught in ability groups using a variety of teaching approaches to support their individual learning needs. Independence is actively encouraged, while appropriate scaffolding and support are provided to ensure all pupils can achieve success.

Pupils continue to benefit from opportunities to learn through play and practical experiences, alongside more formal learning activities. Dedicated areas for reading, writing and mathematics help pupils deepen their understanding and apply their skills confidently across different contexts.

Outdoor learning area

All Primary classes have access to our outdoor learning area throughout the school day. This valuable learning environment supports communication, independence, collaboration and problem-solving skills, while also promoting physical development and wellbeing.

Teachers use the outdoor space to enhance curriculum learning through practical, engaging and meaningful experiences. The area also plays an important role in supporting sensory regulation, with a range of resources available to help pupils recognise and manage their sensory needs.

All primary classrooms operate a free-flow approach, allowing pupils to move between indoor and outdoor learning environments throughout the day.

Semi-formal Equals curriculum: The Semi-formal Equals curriculum supports pupils with more complex learning needs who benefit from a holistic, thematic approach. It integrates key areas such as communication, My Thinking, My Independence, and My Creativity, with learning delivered through engaging topics and practical experiences. The curriculum emphasises life skills, emotional regulation, and functional application of knowledge, helping pupils to build confidence, develop social interaction, and prepare for everyday challenges. Activities are tailored to promote enjoyment, engagement, and progress at each pupil’s individual pace.

Formal Equals curriculum: The formal Equals curriculum is designed for pupils who are ready to access subject-specific learning in a structured and progressive way. It covers core academic areas such as science, computing, PSHE, humanities, and the arts, with a focus on developing knowledge, understanding, and skills that align with the national curriculum. Lessons are differentiated to meet individual needs and promote independence, critical thinking, and the ability to apply learning across contexts. Pupils engage in meaningful activities that encourage problem-solving, collaboration, and personal development.

Swimming

Pupils in Primary Yellow and Primary Blue attend weekly swimming lessons at Big Fish Little Fish Swim School.

Swimming sessions support the development of gross motor skills, coordination, confidence, personal development and water safety awareness. These lessons also provide valuable opportunities for pupils to develop independence and celebrate personal achievements.
